BackupEDGE 3.0 Information
We're very pleased to announce that BackupEDGE 03.00.00 is just about ready for Beta.
BackupEDGE 3.0 is different enough from 2.x that it will require some getting used to, specifically in scheduling backup jobs. It is far more flexible, but operates differently.
New Features in 3.0
The new features in BackupEDGE 3.0 create new opportunities for both improving the quality and reducing the cost of data protection. These include:
* MySQL Hot Backups
* Blu-ray writer support
* Multiple archives per medium on...
- Tape media
- Blu-ray re-writable media
- DVD re-writable media
- Iomega REV media
* D-to*-to-* Backups
Perform a quick backup to something fast, like a removable disk, FTP, or REV Resource, then send the archive to a FTP or Amazon S3 remote Resource, or to tape, DVD etc. after the backup window is closed. The archive is automatically resegmented / re-compressed as necessary to fit the target Resource.
To tie all this together, we've developed an:
* All New Scheduler
allowing easy creation of even the most complicated backup schemes, multiple week rotations, etc. For instance, even the Basic Schedule could have all of the following defined:
- Master Backup last day of year.
- Master Backup first day of each month.
- Master Backup 15th day of each month.
- Differential backup every weekday.
There are far more combinations available but you get the idea. Since this opens up the possibility of having many archives, management becomes more important, so each schedule item has a new feature:
* Time To Live (AKA expiration)
An archive that hasn't reached its expiration date won't be automatically deleted or overwritten. For instance, if a backup to tape is set to expire in one day and the tape is left in the drive, the next nightly backup will overwrite it. That is our current behavior. If you set the expiration to more than one day, the next night's
backup will simply append to the end of the tape, opening up a new range of possibilities. Fast File Restore and Instant File Restore capabilities are maintained on media with multiple archives. RecoverEDGE disaster recovery is capable of scanning media and displaying a list of archives available for restore.
